Sweeteners are incredibly sweet substances. For instance, cyclamate is about 40 times sweeter than sugar, while advantame is approximately 37,000 times sweeter.
Low-Calorie Sweetness
These sweeteners typically provide little to no calories. They are used in such small amounts that even those like aspartame, which contains about 4 kcal/g, contribute negligible calories. Additionally, sweeteners do not impact blood sugar levels, insulin release, or digestion, and they do not harm teeth.
Types of Sweeteners
Currently, there are eleven sweeteners approved for use in food products within the European Union. These sweeteners vary in their chemical structure, sweetness intensity, technological properties, and how they decompose.
